Five Bahraini Members of Parliament (MPs) have submitted a proposal urging the implementation of stricter regulations on the sale and transfer of mobile phone lines to residents and visitors.
The proposal, put forward by MPs Basma Mubarak, Mohammed Al Ahmed, Jaleela Al Sayed, Hanan Fardan, and Bader Al Tamimi, emphasises the importance of national security and public interest in addressing this issue.
The explanatory memorandum accompanying the proposal highlights the increasing use of mobile phone lines in various crimes, including fraud and extortion. The MPs argue that the ease of obtaining and discarding these lines allows criminals to operate anonymously and coordinate their activities, posing a significant threat to public safety in the age of advanced technology and communication.
The proposal cites examples of other countries that have implemented stringent controls on the purchase and sale of mobile phone lines to prevent misuse. The MPs contend that Bahrain should follow suit by introducing stricter regulations, particularly for residents and visitors.
These regulations could include a limit on the number of lines an individual foreigner can own, facilitating the tracking of illicit activities, as per the proposal. This measure, they argue, would enhance security and safety within Bahraini society by reducing the use of mobile phones in criminal activities and ensuring accurate registration of users under their real names.
The MPs believe that the implementation of this proposal will significantly contribute to curbing cybercrime, particularly the recent surge in fraud and extortion cases.
