Run-down homes for low-income families could soon get the repairs they badly need as MPs, led by Hassan Ebrahim, push for a new fund with backing from both the government and banks. The plan aims to tackle long-ignored problems that have left some families living in unsafe conditions. Ebrahim and MP Khalid Buanaq are leading this effort, pulling together resources to cover the cost of repairs for those who can’t afford them. The proposal was put forward at the Council of Representatives yesterday but was delayed due to a packed schedule.
Fair hearing
Supporters hope it will get a fair hearing soon. “This isn’t just about fixing houses,” said Ebrahim. “It’s about giving families a sense of safety and peace that they’ve been missing for too long.” The fund would focus on finishing off old repair jobs left undone and setting up new checks to spot homes in urgent need of work. The Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture will work closely with local councils to find homes at risk, while banks joining in will chip in each year as part of their duty to the community.
Constitution
The proposal is rooted in Bahrain’s Constitution, which says, “The State shall work to provide housing for citizens with limited income.” It also points out that family is the backbone of society, pressing the country to look after and support families. This plan builds on that duty, making clear that the state has a duty to stand by these values for its people.
