Private sector workers may soon see their overtime pay double for night shifts, as MP Jalal Kadhem pushes to secure fairer pay for those putting in extra hours.
Currently, overtime pay stands at an additional 25 per cent for daytime and 50 per cent for night shifts. Kadhem’s proposal aims to lift this to at least 50 per cent for daytime and 100 per cent for night hours, ensuring workers are more fairly rewarded for extended work.
Kadhem argues that the current rates fail to reflect the demands of longer shifts, which take both a physical and mental toll.
“This amendment supports workers who put in extra time outside normal hours, making sure they’re rewarded fairly for their effort and dedication,” he said, emphasising the need to back workers’ well-being and fair treatment.
He added that this increase would show appreciation for the added hours that employees contribute, aiming to create a more balanced workplace.
The proposal aligns with Bahrain’s call for fair treatment in the workplace, ensuring equitable dealings between employers and employees. Kadhem believes the changes could lift spirits and encourage better output, as employees will feel their added efforts are rightly valued and rewarded.
New rates If Parliament gives the green light, the new rates would come into force the day after being published in the Official Gazette.
The proposal, currently with the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee, awaits review before forwarding to the government for possible ratification.
With this pay rise, the plan seeks to balance the scales between work demands and fair reward for Bahrain’s private sector workforce, providing fair compensation for those who often go the extra mile.
