Two historic buildings in Muharraq, battered by time but rich with stories, are now at the centre of a preservation push. With the Muharraq Municipal Council’s backing, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) has proposed keeping the buildings’ iconic exteriors intact while allowing interior updates for continued use.

The first building, located on Road 621, Block 206, has partly crumbled, with substantial damage documented since August 2019. Architectural character The authority has stressed the importance of “preserving the building’s unique outward features” to protect Muharraq’s architectural character.

Meanwhile, the second building, on Road 310, Block 203, faces potential demolition after its owner applied for a permit to rebuild.

However, the authority is urging the owner to retain the building’s ‘original appearance’ to preserve its historic value.

In a formal letter, His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, President of BACA, addressed the Minister of Municipalities Affairs, His Excellency Wael Mubarak, advocating for the preservation of these buildings’ exteriors while supporting functional upgrades. He called for a collaborative effort to protect these heritage sites, stressing the importance of safeguarding their outward appearance to retain Muharraq’s unique architectural identity.

To support these efforts, a working group has been established, bringing together representatives from the municipalities, local police, the municipal council, the governor’s office, the BACA, and public health.

Funding This team is tasked with securing funding and coordinating skilled craftsmen to restore and clean the heritage sites, ensuring their longevity for future generations.

The authority has indicated that this plan is essential to “retain the spirit” of Muharraq’s historic areas and “reduce risks to lives and properties”. Shaikh Khalifa also expressed appreciation for the ministry’s support, noting the buildings as symbols of Bahrain’s rich past.
