Mr. Paul Xavier, an Indian national and long-standing resident of Bahrain, is preparing to return to India after an extraordinary 13 years of medical care and rehabilitation at Muharraq Geriatric Hospital. At approximately 64 years old, Mr. Xavier’s journey back to his homeland will mark the end of a deeply challenging chapter, supported by the compassion of medical and community care providers across Bahrain. His 67-year-old elder brother in India has committed to continue caring for him upon his return.

Mr. Xavier’s journey in Bahrain began as far back as 1978, when he first arrived by ship and started his career with Delmon Restaurant. Despite his longstanding ties to Bahrain, documentation of his residence or employment history is unavailable. Mr. Sudheer Thirunilath, President of the Pravasi Legal Cell Global PRO & Bahrain Chapter, has tirelessly pursued avenues to secure Mr. Xavier’s documents and an outpass to facilitate his return, which was issued in 2018 and recently renewed, enabling his journey home.

Mr. Xavier’s health challenges began tragically in 2011, when he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a severe accident. A craniotomy was performed on September 7, 2011, to address a life-threatening subarachnoid hemorrhage, followed by a necessary cranioplasty in November 2011. After initial recovery, he was transferred to Muharraq Geriatric Hospital in 2013 for long-term supportive care.

Upon arrival, Mr. Xavier was bedridden, disoriented, and required round-the-clock assistance. Yet, through the relentless care and dedication of the Muharraq Geriatric Hospital staff, he made significant progress. By August 2013, he had successfully undergone further surgeries, including a cystolitholapaxy and a laparotomy at King Hamad University Hospital, which helped stabilize his health. Today, Mr. Xavier is fully conscious, oriented, and can perform basic functions with assistance—a testament to the exceptional care he received.

While Mr. Xavier endured this lengthy recovery without family by his side, Mr. Sudheer Thirunilath, along with Mr. Josemon and Mr. Shiju from Ernakulam, Kerala, located Mr. Xavier’s elder brother in India, who has now graciously assumed responsibility for his continued care. The family eagerly awaits his arrival at their home in Palluruthy, Ernakulam, Kerala, offering him the warmth and support he has lacked for over a decade.

This heartwarming repatriation would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Indian Embassy in Bahrain, India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the Pravasi Legal Cell, as well as the healthcare providers at Salmaniya Medical Complex, Muharraq Geriatric Hospital, and King Hamad University Hospital. We extend our sincere appreciation to the compassionate staff and medical professionals who contributed to Mr. Xavier’s recovery and well-being over these many years.

Mr. Xavier’s return is a profound reminder of the power of kindness, resilience, and the enduring bonds between the Bahraini and Indian communities, underscoring a shared commitment to ensuring every individual’s well-being and dignity.
