Job seekers facing sudden cuts to their monthly unemployment payments due to minor registration delays could soon see relief, as MPs push for a rule change. Led by Dr Muneer Seroor, the proposal, unanimously approved on Tuesday, calls for a more flexible approach, easing strict attendance requirements that currently penalise those relying on this support.
At present, benefits stop if a job seeker misses a check-in by two days or if an employer mistakenly marks them as refusing work. MPs argue this rule is too strict and puts a strain on those who depend on these payments for daily living expenses.
‘This change would give job seekers some breathing room by allowing valid reasons for delays,’ Seroor said. The proposal is supported by fellow MPs Bader Saleh Al Tamimi, Khalid Buanaq, Abdulwahid Qarata, and Mamdouh Al Saleh. They have requested Parliament to consider the plan, with hopes of sending it to the government soon after.
If approved by government, the plan would introduce some leeway to check-in rules and ensure that employer errors don’t unfairly cut off payments. The aim is to allow job seekers to maintain their support even if minor issues arise, providing more stability while they search for work.
