In anticipation of hosting one of the most prestigious events in the weightlifting calendar, a delegation from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) landed in Bahrain this week to ensure that preparations for the 2024 World Weightlifting Championships are on track.
The delegation’s visit is a significant step toward staging the championship, scheduled to take place from December 4 to 15 near Bahrain's National Theater. The event will be held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty The King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports—a mark of the importance the kingdom places on hosting a successful international competition.
A High-Profile Team Overseeing Preparations
Leading the IWF delegation is CEO Achilleas Tsogas, accompanied by key figures such as Matyas Lencser, Director of Competitions; Timea Horvath, Director of Development and Education; and Pedro Meloni, Technical Advisor for Competitions. Their mission: to assess Bahrain’s readiness to host the sport’s elite athletes and deliver a seamless experience for both competitors and fans.
Upon their arrival, the delegation immediately embarked on a comprehensive inspection of the competition venue. The team examined facilities and reviewed timelines with local organizers, receiving updates on construction progress and logistical planning. The objective is clear: to ensure that Bahrain’s preparations align with international standards for an event of this caliber.
Ensuring Excellence Across Every Aspect
The IWF officials didn’t just limit themselves to inspecting the physical setup. They also engaged in an extensive series of meetings with the various committees responsible for different facets of the event. These committees include technical, media, medical, doping detection, coronation ceremony, and hospitality teams—each critical to ensuring the championship runs smoothly. Additional discussions with committee heads on Thursday continued to fine-tune details, reflecting the comprehensive, collaborative approach to hosting.
Bahrain’s Commitment to a Global Sporting Stage
This visit underscores Bahrain’s dedication to positioning itself as a premier destination for global sporting events. For the kingdom, hosting the World Weightlifting Championships is an opportunity to showcase both its organizational capabilities and its passion for elevating sports on an international stage. With the IWF and local organizers working closely together, the stage is set for a memorable championship that will celebrate the spirit and strength of weightlifting athletes from around the world.
As the countdown to December begins, Bahrain’s commitment to delivering a world-class event shines through, with every detail meticulously planned to ensure an unforgettable experience for all.
