A Bahraini woman has been granted a divorce after 15 years of marriage, citing years of physical and verbal abuse by her husband. The court ruling, detailed by the woman’s lawyer, Amani Hameed, stipulates that the divorce is irrevocable (a “triple talaq” in Islamic law), meaning her husband cannot remarry her unless she first marries and consummates a marriage with another man. The woman, who has three children with her husband, presented compelling evidence to the High Shari’a Court detailing a pattern of abuse.

According to Ms. Hameed, her client testified to consistent physical assault, verbal abuse, and insults, coupled with her husband’s drug use She stated that she loathed her husband and feared for her safety and religious well-being, willingly forfeiting her marital rights. The court’s decision hinged on substantial evidence presented by the woman. This included witness testimonies corroborating the abuse, medical reports documenting injuries.
