Approval for A’ali’s new market is finally in, after the Northern Municipal Council’s persistent efforts to secure a dedicated space for locals. Undersecretary for Municipalities Affairs, Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, confirmed that the ministry is now considering a small market for vegetables and meats on a site allocated to the ministry — though the plan awaits coordination with the Urban Planning and Development Authority, along with financial and regulatory clearances.
This breakthrough follows The Daily Tribune’s report on 15 October, where the council’s tireless push for the proposal was brought to light.
Purpose and benefits
Municipal Council member Abdullah Ashoor told The Daily Tribune, “After pressing for the proposal at our last regular meeting and speaking with His Excellency the Minister, we clarified the market’s purpose and the benefits it would bring.
We’re grateful for his understanding of the area’s needs and his resolve to ensure residents and citizens are well-served.” The council’s plan is to create a one-stop market in A’ali, making life easier for locals by centralising grocery and other essentials in a single location, all while increasing opportunities for Bahraini vendors.
Growing population
In a written statement, Ashoor noted that A’ali’s growing population now includes newcomers from Areas 715 and 716.
He stressed that a central market, reserved for Bahrainis and promoting local goods, would be a boon for the area, providing jobs and ensuring that essential items are readily available to locals. Although the ministry previously suggested that existing shops are sufficient, Ashoor remarked that many residents disagree.
Practical site
“Locals have spoken up, stressing the need for a proper market to fill the gaps left by current options. We have land ready that could easily serve as a practical site for this much-needed project,” he added. The council has vowed to keep pushing for a market in A’ali that serves the needs of the community, giving residents easy access to essential goods and creating local opportunities.
