The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has announced the recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for FY 2024, and we are proud to honor Dr. Abdulrahman A. Hussain Jawahery, Chief Executive Officer of Bapco Refining and former President of Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. (GPIC), as one of this year’s esteemed awardees. Dr. Jawahery is recognized for his outstanding efforts in promoting Japanese culture in Bahrain and fostering stronger ties between Japan and Bahrain.
A notable achievement of Dr. Jawahery’s efforts is his instrumental role in establishing the Bahrain-Japan Friendship Garden. This garden commemorates the historic first official visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Japan in 2012. Dr. Jawahery spearheaded the planning and development of this unique cultural project, located in the Al-Areen Wildlife Park. Opened in 2015, the garden has become a symbol of cultural exchange, showcasing Japanese traditions and strengthening bilateral relations. Its inauguration was graced by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa and other distinguished guests.
Beyond the Friendship Garden, Dr. Jawahery has significantly advanced collaborations between Japanese companies and GPIC. His strong partnerships with leading Japanese firms have led to transformative projects, such as the adoption of carbon capture technology from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries nearly two decades ago. He has since championed the implementation of this technology across other Bahraini enterprises. Additional contributions include the development of a large-scale urea resin plant utilizing advanced technology from JGC, and the integration of Yokogawa’s engineering solutions to optimize production efficiency.
