Hazardous waste in Bahrain on the decline

A recent report released by the Supreme Council for the Environment reveals that hazardous waste inventory in Bahrain decreased at the beginning of last year, recording 559,819.21 tons, and ending the year at 556,759.86 tons. This marks a reduction of 185,677 tons compared to the 288,963 tons reported in 2022.
In contrast, industrial waste saw a relative increase in 2023, reaching 86,476.18 tons, up from 83,409.22 tons in 2022. The report also highlighted the collection of 23,018.78 tons classified as other hazardous waste during 2023. Additionally, 3,153.50 tons of hazardous waste were exported for treatment, recycling, or reuse.
Landfills
Regarding other methods of hazardous waste disposal, the statistics indicate that 36,281.10 tons were recycled, 9,754.88 tons were incinerated, and 12,782.00 tons were disposed of in landfills. An additional 52,439.60 tons were processed in various facilities for waste treatment and disposal.
The report also noted that municipal waste collected from households amounted to 581.41 thousand tons in 2023, reflecting a decrease from 608.89 thousand tons in 2022.
