Push to raise BD600,000 budget for Northern Municipal Council projects

A plans to increase the Towns and Villages Develoment’s budget to BD600,000 and tackle the issue of abandoned houses was the focus of a meeting between MPs and the Northern Municipal Council. Held in Parliament, the discussions aimed to address funding shortfalls and improve services for the Northern region.

The meeting was led by Northern Municipal Council Chairman Dr Sayyed Shubber Al Wadaei, with Deputy Speaker AbdulNabi Salman, Vice Chairwoman Zaina Jassim, and several MPs and council members in attendance.

Collaboration

Dr Al Wadaei welcomed the collaboration, saying it creates opportunities to address the region’s most pressing needs. He called for MP support to secure the increased budget, which would cover maintenance, restoration, and the installation of barriers. The council raised the issue of abandoned homes, proposing an amendment to Article 18 of the Building Regulation Law to address a legislative gap.

Restoration

A detailed report outlining pending restoration requests and proposed solutions will be shared with MPs for further action. Additional funding was also requested for the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) to preserve homes over 50 years old, classified as heritage sites. The attendees agreed to arrange meetings with the Ministers of Works and Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture to discuss the region’s project priorities.

Challenges

A press conference was proposed to outline the Northern region’s challenges and set out the council’s and MPs’ shared vision for addressing them. Dr Al Wadaei described the discussions as an important step towards stronger cooperation with MPs, with the aim of improving services and infrastructure for the Northern region’s residents.
