Delivering a spirited address at the inaugural session of the 9th UN World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in Bahrain, Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), celebrated the historic occasion of hosting the forum in the Middle East for the first time.
"This is the best forum you can attend," Pololikashvili declared, reflecting on the evolution of the Gastronomy Tourism Forum since its inception nine years ago. He highlighted the growing interest and diversity in gastronomy tourism, which has transformed from a focus on food preparation to a broader platform incorporating technology, innovation, and cultural exchange.
"We have brought the world closer here in Bahrain," Pololikashvili remarked, noting the presence of over 600 participants from 50 countries, representing all continents. He emphasized the power of gastronomy to connect cultures and promote destinations, stating, "Gastronomy can make people fall in love with your country. It shows the culture and beauty of your nation."
Pololikashvili underscored the forum’s role in promoting lesser-known culinary traditions, such as African and Middle Eastern gastronomy, which he said remain underrepresented globally. "Middle Eastern gastronomy, like its culture, deserves to be more widely recognized," he said, describing the forum in Bahrain as a "historical step" in showcasing the region’s culinary heritage to the world.
He also highlighted the UNWTO's efforts to promote gastronomy tourism on a regional level, referencing the first Asia-Pacific Gastronomy Forum held in Cebu, Philippines, and initiatives in Africa, including Zambia and Zimbabwe, to spotlight local cuisines.
Expressing gratitude to Bahrain’s Minister of Tourism, H.E. Fatima bint Jaffer Al Sairafi, and her team, Pololikashvili commended the Kingdom’s hospitality, cultural authenticity, and leadership in hosting the forum. "We are right to have chosen Bahrain for this historic forum. It’s a unique, mysterious, and wonderful country," he said, urging participants to explore Bahrain’s culinary offerings and forge connections with its people.
The forum, which has gathered global leaders, experts, and stakeholders, continues to explore how gastronomy can drive tourism, promote sustainability, and enhance cultural understanding. Pololikashvili concluded with warm wishes for Oman on its National Day, suggesting that the Middle East’s gastronomic journey could extend to other regional nations in the years ahead.
With this landmark event, Bahrain is positioned as a key player in the global gastronomy tourism landscape, paving the way for the Middle East to take its rightful place on the world culinary stage.
