Late-night hammering and grinding are set to end as the Southern Municipal Council backs new operating hours for garages and workshops, aiming to restore peace in residential areas and ease traffic congestion. Under the proposal, activities will be restricted to between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.
“This is about protecting the calm of our neighbourhoods,” said Mohammed Hussain Darraj, council member for the Fourth Constituency who proposed the change. “Setting clear limits for these operations will ease noise, reduce traffic issues, and address environmental concerns.”
The council approved the changes during its meeting yesterday, based on a report from the Technical Committee. The report flagged rising disturbances linked to urban sprawl and growing population density as key concerns. The new rules will apply to all garages and workshops in the Fourth Constituency.
Meanwhile, in East Riffa’s Block 905, within the Fifth Constituency, tailored hours are proposed: 7:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm These hours are pending final approval.
Solutions
The committee also highlighted the need for longer-term solutions. “Moving these activities away from residential zones is essential in the future,” the report noted. Under Article 20 of the Municipalities Law, the council’s recommendations now head to the Minister of Municipalities Affairs for review.
Objections
The minister has 15 days to object. If objections arise, the matter could escalate to the Cabinet for a final decision. “This decision is a step towards improving the quality of life for residents,” said Mubarak Faraj Mubarak, head of the Technical Committee. The council hopes these measures will provide immediate relief while paving the way for more permanent solutions.
