Claims that an Asian expat manager withheld wages from a colleague have been dismissed by the Sixth Minor Criminal Court, overturning an earlier fine of BD200. The court ruled that the manager had no control over payroll and was wrongly accused.
The case arose when the manager was accused of withholding the employee’s wages and being responsible for payroll distribution — claims he firmly denied. Defended by lawyer Essam Al Tayeb, the manager explained that his role revolved around overseeing food supplies, coordinating with vendors, and ensuring the premises met health and safety standards.
Job
Paying staff wages, he maintained, was never part of his job. The defence described the allegations as baseless, pointing out that the manager had a cordial, professional relationship with the employee and there was no evidence of animosity or wrongdoing.
The lawyer argued that the accusations had been aimed at the wrong person, as the manager had no authority over salaries.
Involvement
Witnesses were called to confirm the manager’s role and his lack of involvement in payroll disputes. The defence also urged the court to consider the absence of any intent to break the law or act unfairly. In the end, the court ruled in favour of the manager, dismissing the case entirely
