500 Fils sting brings down drug peddler

Police have successfully uncovered a drug trafficking network, following a carefully orchestrated sting operation that lured a suspect with the offer of drugs for just 500 fils.

The Asian national, who had been under surveillance, attempted to flee as police closed in on him during the deal in the heart of the operation. However, his escape was short-lived, as authorities tracked him to his home, where they arrested him.

The Anti-Narcotics Directorate, acting on a crucial tip-off, swiftly mobilized a covert team after informants revealed that the suspect was in possession of a stash of psychoactive substances meant for both personal use and trafficking. The information proved to be vital in bringing the operation to fruition.

Once in custody, police made more discoveries. They recovered 307 grams of crystal methamphetamine—known locally as ‘shabu’—as well as 12 dinars believed to be proceeds from drug sales. In addition, investigators uncovered a trove of drug-related paraphernalia at the suspect's residence, including electronic scales, packaging materials, and four packages of cannabis weighing 20 grams. Even more alarming was the presence of another smaller package of drugs, further underscoring the scale of the operation.

As the plot thickened, officers found a second suspect at the property, exhibiting erratic behaviour and slurred speech, strongly indicating recent drug use. After being arrested, the second individual admitted to frequenting the dealer for cannabis, confirming his role in the trafficking operation.

Under interrogation, the first suspect revealed the full extent of his involvement, admitting to delivering drugs for an accomplice and earning 500 fils for each drop-off. He also confessed to using narcotics himself.

The second suspect also acknowledged his participation in the illicit trade.Both men now face serious charges of possession and trafficking of cannabis and other psychoactive substances. Their case is set to be heard in court on 29 November, as authorities promise further revelations in what is shaping up to be a significant drug trafficking Representative picture bust.
