A multi-level intersection is set to be constructed at Riffa’s Clock Roundabout to alleviate traffic congestion, the Ministry of Works announced.
The project follows recommendations from a comprehensive traffic and planning study conducted in collaboration with a consulting firm.
The announcement comes in response to a proposal by Dr Ali Majid Al Nuaimi, with the Ministry outlining a multi-faceted approach to improve key roads in the area.
“The Ministry is currently finalising detailed engineering designs, and tenders will be issued once the necessary approvals and funds are secured,” the Ministry stated.
As part of the Clock Roundabout development project, a partial widening of Shaikh Salman Highway will take place. Preliminary designs are already underway for the section between the Isa Town North (Salmabad) intersection and the intersection of Shaikh Zayed Road and December 16 Highway. A separate study is ongoing for the stretch between this intersection and the Clock Roundabout.
The Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Traffic highlighted the critical role the Clock Roundabout plays in connecting Riffa, Hamad Town, Isa Town, and Awali.
The Southern Municipal Council has also stressed the importance of upgrading Riffa Avenue, the Crown Prince Highway, and Shaikh Salman Highway to enhance accessibility.
The proposal will be discussed during Tuesday’s weekly Parliament meeting, where the Public Utilities and Environment Committee has already reviewed and recommended its approval.
