A glass firm has been ordered to pay BD 44,199 plus BD 500 in legal fees after a series of bounced cheques left it in a legal quagmire.
The High Civil Court handed down the ruling following a lawsuit over unpaid invoices, which saw the company accused of failing to honour payments for supplied materials.
The dispute centres on five cheques, issued between December 2023 and April 2024, ranging from BD 7,661 to BD 9,654. These cheques were intended to cover the cost of materials delivered under a business agreement but were returned due to insufficient funds.
According to court documents, the plaintiff, another glass company, had repeatedly attempted to recover the funds, only to face continued resistance. Evidence presented during the trial included copies of the bounced cheques, bank notices confirming the lack of funds, and a series of correspondence between the companies highlighting the unpaid bills.
In its November 18 decision, the court ruled unequivocally in favour of the plaintiff, noting that the defendant offered no satisfactory explanation for failing to settle the debt. As a result, the defendant was ordered to cover additional legal costs, including BD 986.500 for case-related expenses and a BD 10 enforcement fee.
Initially, the case was filed as a payment order in October 2024, but this request was denied, prompting the matter to proceed to a full Civil Court hearing.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Zainab Ali Madan, welcomed the decision, emphasising that the court’s ruling underscores the importance of honouring financial commitments in business dealings.
