More than 50 food trucks stationed along Al Estiqlal Highway have been ordered to leave immediately, following notices issued by the Southern Municipality. Warning stickers were placed on the vehicles, with legal action threatened for non-compliance.
This move mirrors recent steps taken by the Northern Municipality, which targeted food trucks in Salmabad for similar reasons. The food trucks along the highway serve a variety of offerings, including sandwiches and light snacks, attracting a diverse customer base.
MP Mohammed Al Olaiwi told The Daily Tribune: ‘There are parliamentary moves to stop the removal of food trucks, especially as Bahrain has around 500 licensed trucks, which provide a livelihood for many families. A good number of these owners turned to this trade after struggling with unemployment, and many now depend on it to support their households.’
Meanwhile, TDT has learned that several MPs are planning to discuss ways to halt this action, with announcements expected soon.
