Indian suicide on the rise in Gulf
Suicide rates among Indians working abroad are on the rise, with most of them being reported from the Gulf, said India.
India’s Minister of State of External Affairs General Vijay Kumar Singh revealed that in the past three years 1212 Indians took their own lives.
While 497 Indians committed suicide in 2013, in 2014 the number rose to 451 and this figure has already reached 436 this year.
According to India’s records, a total of 541 of their citizens committed suicide in UAE, 337 in Saudi Arabia, 123 in Oman, 114 in Kuwait and 48 in Bahrain.
Mr Singh also pointed out that many Indians are ‘stuck’ in Gulf countries due to job-related problems and absence of proper job contracts, with Kuwait leading the way with 3,236, followed by Saudi Arabia with 2,472, 1,444 in UAE and 413 in Oman.
