Minister of Interior Highlights Challenges and Solutions
Traffic congestion remains a pressing concern in Bahrain, despite ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and implement development projects. In a recent meeting with editors-in-chief of local newspapers, His Excellency Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, addressed the issue, shedding light on the current situation and potential solutions.
The Growing Challenge
HE Shaikh Rashid emphasized that traffic congestion is a global phenomenon influenced by multiple factors. In Bahrain, the number of registered vehicles has steadily increased, with approximately 676,137 vehicles currently on the roads. The annual growth rate of 3.26% adds around 20,000 vehicles each year, indicating that the vehicle count could reach one million within the next decade. This surge places significant strain on the existing road network, even with ongoing upgrades and expansions.
Efforts to Enhance Infrastructure
The government, under the leadership of His Royal Highness Crown Prince and Prime Minister,Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa continues to prioritize road development projects. These initiatives include constructing new roads, expanding existing highways, and enhancing overall traffic capacity. The Traffic Council, which includes key ministries and service authorities, plays a central role in addressing these challenges, aiming to improve traffic safety and efficiency.
Strategic Measures
The Traffic Council has approved an updated traffic improvement strategy, appointing a consultant to conduct a comprehensive study focusing on six key dimensions. These include analyzing the current traffic situation and proposing solutions, such as:
• Implementing smart traffic management systems.
• Installing 500 smart cameras to monitor violations and linking traffic lights to the control room.
• Promoting public transportation through network expansion and innovative solutions.
Legislative Solutions and Public Awareness
HE Shaikh Rashid highlighted the importance of controlling the number of vehicles on the road, suggesting the introduction of legislation to manage car numbers. One proposal involves setting an age limit for vehicles, following examples from countries like Singapore. Additionally, promoting a culture of public transportation use is crucial, alongside efforts to expand and improve the public transport network.
The Minister’s discussion underscored the government’s commitment to tackling traffic congestion through innovative strategies, legislative initiatives, and public engagement. By addressing these challenges, Bahrain aims to enhance mobility and improve quality of life for its residents
