In a recent meeting with editors-in-chief of local newspapers, His Excellency Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Bahrain's Minister of Interior, addressed the current regional tensions and their impact on the Kingdom, highlighting lessons learned from the situation.

During the meeting, H..E Shaikh Rashid commended the disciplined response of the Bahraini society, particularly in these delicate times, emphasizing the country’s collective commitment to maintaining security and social order. He noted that the Kingdom’s responsible community awareness has played a crucial role in navigating these challenging global developments.

The Minister pointed to the escalating situation in the Middle East since October 2023, which has led to severe losses in lives, property, and infrastructure. Despite these challenges, Bahrain has remained steadfast in its pursuit of peace and stability, avoiding war and prioritizing diplomatic measures to protect its people’s interests. Under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Bahrain has sought to lead through wisdom, fostering peace without resorting to conflict.

Reflecting on the lessons learned, H.E. Shaikh Rashid highlighted the significant role of technological advancements in managing crises. He emphasized how technology has enhanced the effectiveness of command and control systems and the precision of weapons and resources used in various operations. However, he noted a critical lesson regarding the "expected or anticipated surprise," where identifying potential dangers early and addressing them proactively is essential to preventing future escalation. Delayed responses to threats, he cautioned, could lead to a more difficult situation.

The Minister also acknowledged the growing importance of media in conflict situations, where different parties seek to control narratives. He observed the impact of live broadcasts and satellite media on public perception and stressed the importance of responsible, organized media efforts to ensure the dissemination of accurate information.

Religious Speech and Its Role

Turning to the topic of religious discourse, H.E. Shaikh Rashid reaffirmed the role of mosques in Bahrain as places of worship, guidance, and social cohesion. With 1,304 mosques in the Kingdom, he expressed gratitude for the efforts of mosque managers and preachers who guide the community through sermons and religious teachings.

However, the Minister also acknowledged incidents of politicized religious sermons, citing the case of Al Sadiq Mosque in Diraz, where politicized speeches and unauthorized rallies have taken place. He emphasized that while mosques remain open for prayers, such activities are strictly prohibited as they violate Bahrain's laws.

The Role of Majalis

Addressing concerns over the rise of political seminars in Bahrain's Majalis, Shaikh Rashid recognized the historical and cultural importance of Majalis in Bahraini society. Traditionally, Majalis serve as spaces for community gatherings, where cultural values, customs, and traditions are passed down from one generation to the next. He praised the Majalis owners for their role in preserving these practices.

However, the Minister expressed concern over the increasing politicization of Majalis, viewing it as a deviation from their intended purpose. While acknowledging the rights of Majalis owners, he made it clear that they are accountable for ensuring these spaces remain focused on cultural and social activities, rather than becoming platforms for political discussions.

In his address, H.E. Shaikh Rashid emphasized the importance of unity, vigilance, and proactive measures in safeguarding Bahrain's security and stability. As the Kingdom continues to navigate regional tensions and evolving challenges, the government remains committed to ensuring peace, security, and the preservation of Bahrain’s cultural values.
