Food truck removals from Shaikh Isa Highway have sparked alarm in Parliament, with MPs stepping in to delay the move amid fears for the livelihoods of 500 families.

The proposal, brought forward by Mohammed Jassim Al Olaiwi and Ahmed Al Salloom, calls for a halt to the removals until proper alternative sites are provided.

The proposers stressed the financial burden such removals would place on families who rely on these small businesses, many of whom have taken out loans to set up or improve their ventures.

“The sudden decision to remove these food trucks without notice has left owners with no opportunity to find alternative sources of income, putting their livelihoods at risk,” the explanatory document read.

The document further pointed out that many food truck operators are already struggling to meet basic expenses such as rent or loan repayments.

It emphasised that these businesses are often a last resort for unemployed individuals seeking to support their families.

The proposal insists that no food truck should be removed until alternative locations are identified and provided.

“Around 500 licensed food trucks operate across the country, supporting an equal number of families. Removing them without offering alternatives will cause severe financial hardship,” the document stated.

Challenges

The proposers also called on authorities to help owners relocate, citing the financial and logistical challenges involved.

They argued that such support aligns with government plans to back small and medium enterprises under the guidance of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

The proposal was submitted as an urgent matter under Article 68 of the Constitution and Article 128 of Parliament’s internal rules.

Immediate attention

“This issue requires immediate attention to prevent hundreds of families from losing their incomes. Authorities must provide reasonable solutions before moving forward with such measures,” the proposers concluded.

The planned removals are set to affect food trucks in locations including Estiqlal Highway, Al Sayh Avenue, Karbabad Beach, Juffair Beach, and Zallaq
