Expats working in Bahrain’s fishing industry are set to face new regulations after Parliament approved a proposal to introduce stricter rules.
The move aims to preserve the kingdom’s fishing traditions, safeguard fish stocks, and create more opportunities for Bahraini workers in the sector.
The proposal, passed during yesterday’s session, was brought forward by MPs Muneer Seroor, Lulwa Al Rumaihi, Najeeb Al Kuwari, Maryam Al Sayegh, and Mohammed Al Ahmed.
It seeks to establish clear standards for foreign workers in Bahrain’s territorial waters, amid concerns over the environmental and economic impact of unregulated practices.
“This profession is a cornerstone of Bahrain’s cultural and economic identity, deeply rooted in the history and heritage of our ancestors,” the explanatory memorandum stated.
It emphasised that regulating foreign workers is essential to protect fish stocks, preserve the marine environment, and secure the industry for future generations.
Overfishing and ecological damage have become pressing issues, raising alarm among policymakers over the future of Bahrain’s fishing sector. MPs stressed the need to address these challenges urgently.
