The High Appeals Court has issued its ruling in the case of a fight stemming from a dispute over the sale of an ice block in the Manama Central Market. The incident, which resulted in the defendant stabbing the victim, causing permanent injuries, has concluded with a reduced sentence for the 44-year-old defendant.
The High Criminal Court had initially sentenced the defendant to seven years imprisonment, followed by deportation, and confiscation of the murder weapon. However, the High Appeals Court, after reviewing the appeal, has reduced the sentence to five years imprisonment. The deportation order and confiscation of the weapon remain in effect.
The court's findings detailed an altercation that began with an argument over the sale of an ice block to a customer. The argument involved both the victim and the defendant, who both worked as ice vendors in the market.
The dispute escalated into a physical fight. The defendant, using a knife intended for breaking ice, struck the victim in the face, causing the loss of two lower teeth and significant bleeding.
The defendant then pursued the fleeing victim, stabbing him multiple times in the back, right shoulder, left arm, right elbow, and midsection. The court determined that the defendant intended to kill the victim, but the attack was interrupted by bystanders, allowing the victim to receive prompt medical attention. The injuries resulted in a 10% permanent disability.
The Public Prosecution had charged the defendant with attempted murder; the court found that the crime was not completed due to circumstances beyond the defendant's control.
