Citizens opting for additional health insurance will receive at least 60 per cent of the cost covered by the government, the Ministry of Health has announced.
This is part of the gradual roll-out of The National Health Insurance Program (SEHATI) scheme, which aims to improve access to healthcare services.
The ministry, working with the Supreme Council of Health and other government bodies, is focused on implementing the scheme to deliver preventive, curative, and rehabilitative care.
Quality standards
The system also includes regular medical examinations and will adhere to established quality standards.
Responding to a question from MP Mohammed Mousa Mohammed, the ministry detailed several steps already taken.
These include introducing self-management at primary health centres and public hospitals, rolling out the ‘Choose Your Doctor’ initiative in selected centres, and operating nine 24-hour urgent care centres.
Measures
These measures follow the directive of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to expand around-the-clock services across these facilities.
Efforts are also underway to upgrade health information systems, ensuring they are integrated with all healthcare providers.
Plans to introduce health insurance for residents are progressing, with the scheme expected to launch in 2025.
