Rising sea levels are posing significant risks to sites and facilities along Bahrain’s 140-kilometer coastline, according to a study by the Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE).

In response, the Ministry of Housing has approved 190 operational measures to combat the effects of climate change.

The Ministry of Housing shared this information in response to a related proposal from MPs Khalid Buanq, Ahmed Al Saloum, Maryam Al Dhaen, Maryam Al Sayegh, and Ali Saqr.

The proposal has been discussed by the Public Utilities and Environment Committee of the House of Representatives, which also consulted the Capital Municipal Council and the Muharraq Municipal Council.

Strategic study

The decisions follow a strategic study led by the SCE in partnership with a specialised consulting firm to assess the impact of rising sea levels beyond 2050. The study identifies critical infrastructure and tourist sites at risk and proposes a detailed, time-bound plan for their protection.

Additionally, the SCE leads a dedicated committee, including representatives from various government bodies such as the Urban Planning and Development Authority, to assess potential risks and provide recommendations.

Key industries affected

The Council highlighted the negative impact of rising sea levels on key industries such as agriculture, fishing, and tourism, as well as vital infrastructure, including transportation systems, hospitals, and schools.

Smart sensors, surverys

In response, the Council proposed several precautionary measures, including conducting a comprehensive survey of structures within approximately 100 meters of the coastline, installing smart sensors to monitor sea levels, using satellites and aircraft for periodic surveys, reviewing building codes for coastal structures, and planting trees and mangroves to provide natural protection.

The Muharraq Municipal Council unanimously endorsed the proposal, suggesting additional actions such as developing a comprehensive emergency plan, creating a contingency budget, launching public awareness campaigns, constructing seawalls, and integrating sea level rise considerations into infrastructure planning. The House of Representatives will discuss and vote on the proposal, which has been approved by the Public Utilities and Environment Committee, on Tuesday.
