The Bahraini Embassy in Damascus has relocated Bahraini citizens from hotels in the Sayyida Zaynab area due to overcrowding caused by the influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from northern Syria, Ambassador Waheed Mubarak Sayyar confirmed. This follows reports of thefts at hotels in the area.
While sources confirmed that thefts did occur at a hotel in Sayyida Zaynab, affecting both Bahraini and Syrian guests, they denied circulating rumors of attacks by masked groups. The thefts involved the stealing of money from guest rooms.
Ambassador Sayyar emphasised that the relocation of Bahraini citizens was a precautionary measure taken in response to the significant increase in hotel occupancy due to the displacement crisis. He explicitly denied that the move was related to the reported attacks.
The ambassador reassured that all Bahraini visitors are safe and the embassy maintains constant contact with them. He stressed that the situation in Damascus remains stable and that the southern region, including the route to the Jaber border crossing with Jordan, is secure, contradicting some social media reports.
Currently, fewer than 50 Bahraini citizens are in Syria. Reports suggest that some tour operators are considering suspending trips to Syria due to the evolving situation in certain provinces.
