A Bahraini woman has been fined BD1,000 and permanently stripped of her commercial registration after she unlawfully rented it to an expat restaurateur, who used it to open an eatery. Bahrain’s highest court upheld the punishment, marking the end of a case that the authorities say breaches economic rules and principles.
The Asian defendant, who rented the registration, was also fined BD1,000. The court additionally ordered the cancellation of the Bahraini woman’s business licence from the Ministry of Industry’s records.
The matter first came to light when the Ministry of Industry reported that the restaurant’s owner had been renting out her commercial registration for a monthly fee to the foreign defendant. This arrangement, the ministry argued, violated regulations governing the operation of businesses in Bahrain.
