Bahrain has secured its place as the fifth cheapest country for petrol prices in the Arab world and the second in the Gulf, according to a recent report by Global Petrol Prices.

The island ranked 11th globally, with a litre of petrol costing approximately 531 US cents — roughly 200 fils.

This relatively low cost is linked to Bahrain’s long-standing subsidies, which aim to ease the cost of living and support economic activity.

However, reforms over the past decade have gradually reshaped the subsidy system.

In 2016, petrol prices increased for the first time in over three decades, with some grades seeing rises of more than 50 per cent.

Further adjustments in 2018 raised prices by 12 to 25 per cent, depending on the grade. Despite these changes, Bahrain’s fuel remains among the most affordable globally.

Within the Arab world, Libya leads the table, with petrol priced at 31 cents per litre (11 fils), followed by Kuwait at 341 cents, Egypt at 343 cents, and Algeria at 344 cents. Among Gulf nations, Bahrain prices stand at 577 cents.
