Gulf parliamentarians have thrown their weight behind plans for an Asian energy market and a regional climate finance scheme during talks in Bahrain. The discussions came ahead of a key meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly’s Committee on Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development, set for 8-9 December. The gathering focused on aligning Gulf positions on pressing economic and environmental issues, with an eye on boosting living standards across the Gulf and Asia.

Delegation

Bahrain’s parliamentary delegation was led by MP Ahmed Al Salloom, Chair of Parliament’s Financial and Economic Affairs Committee and Vice President of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly. He was joined by Shura Council members Dr Abdulaziz Hassan Abul and Dr Ebtesam Al Dallal.

Top of the agenda were seven major projects, including plans for an Asian energy market, tackling environmental challenges, spurring economic growth, driving progress on sustainable development goals, ensuring water and sanitation access in Asia, launching a climate-focused financial initiative, and combating poverty.

Diplomacy

The talks also aimed to strengthen Gulf parliamentary diplomacy, encourage knowledge-sharing, and deepen cooperation between member parliaments. Delegates stressed that joint efforts would support the aspirations of Gulf citizens while contributing to broader development goals across Asia.

The upcoming assembly meeting is expected to produce actionable plans to address these urgent challenges, with Gulf representatives determined to push forward on shared priorities.
