Municipal authorities in Bahrain have recorded 3,494 street-use and cleanliness violations linked to commercial shops from 2023 to October 2024, triggering increased inspection campaigns to tackle illegal street encroachments and waste mismanagement. The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture revealed that violations included shops blocking pavements, setting up unauthorised kiosks, and improperly disposing of waste.

The Capital Municipality and the three municipal councils have stepped up efforts to clear infringements, imposing fines after giving offenders a grace period. If removal is not possible, the cases are referred to the Legal Affairs Directorate for further action, including prosecution.

Parliamentary question

In response to a parliamentary question from MP Hisham Abdulaziz Al Awadhi, the ministry confirmed that 38 inspectors are employed across the Capital Municipality and the three councils. They possess the qualifications required under the Civil Service Bureau’s job descriptions, with most granted judicial enforcement powers.

Inspectors regularly visit commercial shops to review violations, ensuring pavements remain unobstructed and waste is properly managed. If illegal structures persist, inspectors enforce removal orders and impose fines as part of broader efforts to keep Bahrain’s streets clear and tidy.

The ministry also stressed that public cleanliness regulations are enforced throughout the country, with routine inspections outside shops aimed at maintaining safe, navigable streets for pedestrians and reducing environmental hazards caused by improper waste disposal.
