Plans for a comprehensive women’s centre in the Southern Governorate are a step closer to reality, as the Services Committee unanimously approved the proposal to provide tailored support and training for women.

The initiative is set to be debated and voted on in Parliament next Tuesday. Submitted by MP Dr Ali Majid Al Nuaimi, the proposal focuses on creating a facility that addresses women’s needs while respecting their privacy and providing an environment conducive to personal development. Advocates argue that such a centre aligns with Bahrain’s constitutional guarantee of women’s rights, particularly in underserved areas.

Care

“The proposed centre would ensure necessary care for women in the Southern Governorate, which is not just a need but a constitutional right outlined in Bahrain’s Constitution,” the explanatory note emphasised. It also stressed the importance of “guaranteeing women’s privacy by providing suitable programmes and courses designed to help them thrive in Bahraini society.”

The Services Committee, chaired then by Lulwa Ali Al Rumaihi, reviewed the proposal during two meetings held on 24 January and 12 February. These discussions included input from the Ministry of Social Development, the Supreme Council for Women, and the Bahrain Women Union.
