Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) has announced the launch of the “Retro Manama” event, which forms part of the Celebrate Bahrain Season 2024. The event will take place at various locations throughout the Manama Souq from December 25, 2024 to January 7, 2025, aiming to celebrate the historical, economic and social heritage of Manama.
The old market streets, squares and shopping centres will feature cultural and artistic performances reflecting Bahrain's identity throughout different historical periods. It is anticipated that the event will attract citizens, residents and visitors, particularly from the GCC countries, given the significant economic and social transformations that characterised the Arabian Gulf during that time.
In this context, Ms. Sara Ahmad Buhiji, CEO of BTEA, confirmed that the Manama Souq represents a symbol rich in its ancient history and diverse culture, noting that the “Retro Manama” event is a tribute to the spirit of the city that has inspired generations through the ages.
Ms. Buhiji explained that the event aims to deliver a unique experience that reflects the connection between the past and the present, while enhancing everyone’s bond with Bahrain’s rich heritage, which forms an integral part of the Gulf’s collective memory. She added that the event will feature elements from historic eras in its designs, music and classic games. Activities will take place across multiple locations within the Manama Souq, including shopping centres that were active during that period. Some buildings will provide stunning views of the market and city, allowing visitors to enjoy the unique winter atmosphere that enlivens the market.
The CEO expressed her hope that attendees, especially from the GCC countries, will enjoy an exceptional experience at this distinctive event during the Celebrate Bahrain Season, taking them back to significant periods that witnessed the region’s development.
Furthermore, the “Retro Manama” event will include a variety of activities such as music, classic fashion, traditional cuisine, and traditional games, alongside exhibitions that highlight the historical milestones that have made Manama a symbol of economic advancement and cultural diversity in the Arabian Gulf.
It is worth noting that the “Retro Manama” event is part of the Celebrate Bahrain Season 2024, which will see the organisation of numerous diverse entertainment programmes and activities throughout December. This initiative is in partnership with the private sector, aimed at showcasing the status of the Kingdom of Bahrain as a distinguished tourist destination that attracts citizens, residents and visitors from fellow GCC countries, while also enhancing the role of the tourism sector in supporting the national economy.
