Plans for a hanging garden, shops, and a community hall in Malkiya have been given the green light by the Northern Municipal Council yesterday, aiming to breathe new life into a neglected site.

The project, put forward by Services and Public Affairs Committee member Zainab Al Durazi, involves building a multi-storey complex with shops on the ground floor, a community hall on the first floor, and a hanging garden offering much-needed green space for residents.

“The idea is to create a lively community hub where business and leisure come together,” said Al Durazi. “The shops on the ground floor will offer variety, while the hall above can be used for anything from children’s activities to events. At the top, the garden will be a place where people can relax and enjoy a healthier environment.”

Development

Al Durazi stressed that the development would transform a neglected plot while supporting local businesses and encouraging eco-friendly design, including solar-powered lighting.

“We’re turning a forgotten space into something the community can be proud of — good for business and good for residents,” she said.

The Services and Public Affairs Committee reviewed the plan during its meeting on 27 November, concluding that the site’s position on a key commercial street near residential areas made it well-suited for development.

Trade

The project is expected to boost trade while offering free public amenities.

“This is more than just a construction project,” Al Durazi added. “It’s about creating a place where people can connect, businesses can thrive, and families can enjoy time together. It’s an investment in both our economy and our quality of life.”

The council has formally referred the proposal to the Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture for final approval, with hopes that work on the site could begin next year.
