The Southern Governorate Municipality has revealed that it is leveraging GPS technology as a key component of a comprehensive upgrade to its waste management system, aiming to enhance efficiency and improve the cleanliness of residential areas.

The initiative involves the replacement of all existing metal waste bins with modern, eco-friendly alternatives, and a crucial element of this upgrade is the integration of GPS tracking into each new bin.

This real-time tracking capability allows the municipality to monitor bin locations, ensuring efficient waste collection routes and addressing any issues promptly. The GPS data provides valuable insights into bin fill levels, allowing for optimised collection schedules and preventing overflowing bins, a common source of litter and aesthetic problems.  The system also helps identify any unauthorised movement or tampering with bins, enabling swift responses to potential vandalism or misuse.

The municipality's commitment to cleanliness is further underscored by the ongoing enforcement of Public Cleanliness Law No. (10) of 2019.  This law addresses improper waste disposal, which often leads to pollution and negatively impacts the appearance of neighbourhoods.  The GPS data will assist in identifying areas with recurring issues, allowing for targeted interventions and community engagement to promote responsible waste disposal practices.

To further optimise waste collection, the municipality requests residents to place their garbage bags out between 8 pm and 10 pm daily.  This coordinated approach, combined with the GPS-enabled tracking system, aims to streamline waste management, minimise overflowing bins, and maintain clean and safe public spaces.

Residents are encouraged to report any concerns or observations regarding waste management through the municipality's contact centre at 17986000 or via WhatsApp at 17986030.
