Buthoor Al Bahrain, a pioneering initiative for sustainable urban development in Bahrain, made a significant visit to the British Embassy to advance its mission of promoting urban greening and enhancing public spaces. The initiative, a collaboration between UN-Habitat and Bahrain’s Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, aligns with the Kingdom’s National Afforestation Plan to double the number of trees by 2035.
During the visit, representatives from Buthoor Al Bahrain met with British Embassy officials to exchange ideas on fostering a greener future. The discussion emphasized the critical role of joint partnerships in achieving sustainable urban development and environmental conservation.
A highlight of the event was the symbolic distribution of trees, reinforcing a shared commitment to environmental stewardship. Both parties aim to inspire individuals and organizations across Bahrain to engage in green initiatives and take steps toward sustainability.
Dr. Fernanda Lonardoni, Head of UN-Habitat, underscored the importance of collaboration:
“Our visit to the British Embassy marks an important step in fostering collaborative efforts towards sustainability and urban greening in Bahrain. By working together with our partners, we can strengthen our shared commitment to building resilient, sustainable communities and inspire meaningful change for future generations.”
British Ambassador to Bahrain, Alastair Long, expressed the UK’s dedication to climate action:
“We were delighted to welcome UN-Habitat into the British Embassy garden to hear more about their afforestation campaign Buthoor Al Bahrain and discuss how we can support environmental efforts in the Kingdom. Planting trees not only enhances our surroundings but provides a lasting nature-based solution to the Kingdom’s overarching climate goals.”
Launched in October 2024, Buthoor Al Bahrain has been actively promoting its message of sustainability, aiming to engage citizens and residents in the Kingdom. As the campaign continues through December, the initiative is set to distribute more trees and foster greater awareness about the importance of afforestation and urban greening.
