Ghada Hameed Habib, Secretary General of the Ombudsman and Chair of the Commission for the Rights of Prisoners and Detainees, revealed that the number of complaints submitted to the Ombudsman’s office has decreased by 50% over the past two years.

This reduction is attributed to new contemporary legislation, royal pardons for prisoners, and reforms that included open prison programs and alternative sentencing.

This announcement came during a discussion session held on Tuesday organised by the Special Investigations Unit in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, titled “Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System of the Kingdom of Bahrain: Manifestations and Acquired Experiences.”

Habib emphasised that public trust in independent government institutions has been firmly established, marking the first challenge faced by these institutions since their inception.

She noted that people’s confidence in the performance, credibility, seriousness, and neutrality of these institutions has grown significantly.
