A 26-year-old woman has been sentenced to three years in prison after forging her husband’s signature to sell his car and defraud a dealership of BD 20,000. The woman, who fled after the incident, was found guilty in absentia by the High Criminal Court.
The Public Prosecution accused the woman of conspiring with an employee at the dealership to forge an official vehicle transfer form issued by the General Directorate of Traffic. She used the forged signature of her husband, a businessman currently incarcerated at Jau Prison, to facilitate the sale of his vehicle. Additionally, the woman presented a fake power of attorney to authorize the transaction.
The victim testified that he had learned from his wife, while he was in prison, that she had leased his car. He later discovered that the vehicle had been sold without his consent, and he denied ever signing any transfer or power of attorney documents. The signatures on the forms were confirmed as forgeries.
A traffic department employee confirmed that the transfer was processed based on the documents presented, which appeared genuine. A car dealership agent also testified that the woman had approached him, claiming that her husband was imprisoned and authorized her to sell the car. She provided the forged documents, including her husband’s ID and passport, along with her own identification as his wife.
The sale was completed, with the woman receiving BD 20,000, consisting of BD 2,000 in cash and a BD 18,000 check. The court convicted her of forgery and fraud, sentencing her to three years in prison for exploiting her husband’s imprisonment to illegally sell his car and abscond with the proceeds.
