A leading engineering firm has been ordered by the High Labour Court to pay more than 14,000 Bahraini dinars (BD) to a former General Manager of Projects.
The employee, who had worked for the company for seven years, was dismissed without just cause, and his final month's salary was withheld, according to his lawyer, Fatima Abdulsalam Abdullah.
The employee, who held an open-ended contract, was earning a monthly salary of BD 2,900, which included BD 1,800 as a basic salary, BD 400 for housing allowance, and BD 700 in other allowances. His benefits also included a oneway economy class air ticket for himself, his wife, and child to their home country upon contract termination, and coverage of electricity and water bills up to BD 80 per month.
The contract, which was renewed annually, was last updated on June 1, 2024, granting additional benefits until its scheduled end on August 31, 2024. However, the company failed to pay the employee's salary for July 2024, as well as his electricity bill for that month.
On June 26, 2024, the company terminated his employment without cause, despite the employee continuing to work through his notice period in July. The company also cancelled the residency permits for the employee and his family, forcing him to buy new tickets to avoid violating residency laws in Bahrain. Despite multiple requests, the company refused to settle his outstanding payments.
Following a court hearing, the High Labour Court ruled in favour of the employee, ordering the company to pay over BD 14,000 in compensation, covering back pay, benefits, and costs related to the unjust termination and repatriation.
