Bahrain and Algeria are advancing efforts to establish an Arab framework agreement aimed at creating unified regulations for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology. Discussions took place during the sidelines of the 2024 United Nations Internet Governance Forum in Riyadh.
The Bahraini parliamentary delegation, led by Jamal Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, and MP Muneer Seroor, engaged in dialogue with representatives from the Algerian Parliament. The forum, held from December 16 to 18, was organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the Saudi Shura Council. It gathered lawmakers globally to deliberate on tech regulation and digital policy-making.
The discussions centered around an Algerian proposal to establish an Arab Framework Agreement inspired by international conventions developed by the United Nations.
If implemented, the agreement would commit participating nations to adopt common standards for the development and application of AI and related technologies. This move aims to foster collaboration and ensure ethical practices across the Arab region in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
