The Shura Council has voted to increase the claims limit that can be proven through witness testimony, raising it from BD500 to BD1,000. This decision is set to simplify and reduce the cost of settling small financial disputes in Bahrain’s courts.
The move, driven by evolving economic conditions, will now be forwarded to the government for drafting into law. If implemented, individuals will be able to rely on witness testimony for claims of up to BD1,000, minimizing the need for expensive legal procedures.
Shura Council members highlighted that the change would make the legal process more accessible to ordinary Bahrainis handling minor financial disagreements.
“The 500-dinar limit has been around far too long and no longer fits today’s reality,” remarked Lina Qassim, a member of the Shura Council. “Raising the amount to 1,000 dinars will make legal action less daunting and help people settle disputes without spending a fortune.”
First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, Jamal Fakhro, expressed his support for the adjustment but emphasized the importance of careful legal phrasing to ensure its effectiveness.
If approved, this adjustment represents a significant step towards simplifying legal processes for Bahrain’s citizens, ensuring quicker and less burdensome resolutions for small-scale disputes.
