Healthcare sector is ‘dominated’ by female workforce

Bahrain’s open data portal has released comprehensive statistics on the Kingdom’s healthcare sector for the year 2023.

The data reveals a total of 27 government-run health centers distributed across the four governorates, in addition to 10 government hospitals and 24 private hospitals.

The portal provides a detailed breakdown of healthcare workforce numbers, hospital admissions, and maternity care visits. The government is committed to transparency and public access to information regarding its healthcare system.

In the public sector, there were a total of 97,749 patients, while the private sector saw 41,373 patients.

Maternity statistics show 12,943 births in government hospitals, 4,069 in private hospitals, and 60 at home or en route to a hospital.

In terms of healthcare professionals, the figures show a significant female majority in several key roles.

Nurses
Nursing staff comprised 8,122 female nurses and 1,704 male nurses.

Physicians
The physician workforce included 2,210 female physicians and 2,058 male physicians.

Pharmacists
Pharmacists numbered 991 females and 795 males.

Dentists
The dental profession consisted of 479 female dentists and 263 male dentists.

Medical Professionals
Allied medical professionals numbered 623 females and 283 males.

Hospital Admissions in 2023
The number of antenatal care visits reached 55,659 in government facilities and 90,745 in private facilities.

Check-up Visits
Postnatal and post-abortion check-up visits totaled 3,730 in the public sector, with an unspecified number in the private sector.

The release of this data underscores the Bahraini government’s commitment to transparency and public access to information regarding its healthcare system. The detailed statistics provide valuable insights into the structure, staffing, and utilization of healthcare services within the Kingdom.
