Eighty kilograms of freshly caught shrimp have landed three Bangladeshi men behind bars after they were caught fishing illegally with banned bottom-trawling nets off Bahrain’s coast.

The Minor Criminal Court sentenced the trio to a month in prison, fined one of them BD200, and ordered their permanent deportation after serving their sentences. A Bahraini sponsor linked to the operation was hit with a BD1,000.

Confiscation

The court also confiscated the illegal catch, the prohibited fishing nets, and the boat used in the crime.

The bust unfolded when the Coast Guard Command spotted a suspicious boat believed to be trawling for shrimp in restricted waters.

A patrol vessel swooped in, finding the three men aboard a recreational boat.

Realising they were cornered, the fishermen made a desperate bid to flee but were quickly captured, with their hefty haul still on board.
