The High Criminal Court has sentenced a defendant to three years in prison and fined her BD2,000.
The court also ordered her to cover the expenses of repatriating the victim to her home country due to charges of trafficking the victim for forced labour.
The Public Prosecution received a report from the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) regarding the defendant’s exploitation of a young woman in forced labour.
The defendant employed the victim without compensation, subjecting her to long hours of work without any vacation, and in conditions unsuitable for the nature of the job.
Upon receiving the report, the Public Prosecution promptly initiated an investigation. They listened to the victim’s testimony and, as part of their procedures in such cases, placed her in a shelter operated by the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking.
