Trapped in an abusive nightmare, a restaurant worker managed to escape forced labour and harassment, leading to the conviction of her abusers by a criminal court.

The businessman and an Asian supervisor were each sentenced to three years in prison, fined BD2,000, and ordered to pay for the victim’s return home.

They will be deported once their sentences are complete. The victim reported being brought to Bahrain on a tourist visa, lured by false promises of legal employment.

Instead, she found herself living in illegal conditions, forced to work in a restaurant where customers harassed her.

Threats

When she refused to continue, she faced threats, physical abuse, and confinement.

Against the odds, she managed to flee and report her ordeal to the authorities. Two other victims came forward, sharing stories of similar abuse.

They described being deceived by the same individuals, who brought them to Bahrain with promises of decent jobs.

Gruelling shifts

Their passports were taken, and they were forced to work gruelling shifts for no basic pay, only earning commissions from customers.

A police officer investigating the case said the pair specifically targeted Asian women, bringing them to Bahrain under false pretenses.
