"Manama Retro": An Innovative Tourist Experience Highlighting Bahraini Identity

The activities of "Manama Retro" were launched this Wednesday, in the presence of several ministers, members of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), MPs, sponsors, and Manama Souq merchants. As part of Celebrate Bahrain 2024, the event will be held from 25 December 2024 to 7 January 2025, organised by BTEA in strategic partnership with private sector institutions.

The event includes activities that create an exceptional experience highlighting Bahraini heritage in an innovative way, featuring different eras that witnessed prominent economic and social transformations by simulating the memory of time and place.

On this occasion, Her Excellency Fatima bint Jaffar Al Sairafi, Minister of Tourism, stressed that through the ages, Manama Souq has been a symbol of commercial and cultural openness, as a gateway receiving merchants and visitors from all across the world. Manama Retro serves to highlight distinctive Bahraini identity by simulating important eras in the history of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the cultural diversity and rich history of Manama Souq.

She continued, "Manama Retro concludes the events launched in conjunction with the announcement of Manama as the Gulf Tourism Capital 2024. We look forward to this event highlighting the status of Manama as a tourist and cultural destination, as it provides an integrated and diverse experience during the Celebrate Bahrain season. This will strengthen the position of the Kingdom of Bahrain as a leading tourist destination in the region, which will attract a larger number of tourists and drive the wheel of economic development, achieving the goals of the Tourism Strategy 2022-2026."

For her part, Ms. Sarah Ahmed Buheji, CEO of BTEA, stressed that Manama Retro reflects the Authority’s commitment to providing innovative tourism events, in line with the objectives of diversifying the tourism product and enhancing the Kingdom of Bahrain’s position as a prominent tourist destination in the Gulf.

For her part, Ms. Sarah Ahmed Buheji, CEO of BTEA, stressed that Manama Retro reflects the Authority’s commitment to providing innovative tourism events, in line with the objectives of diversifying the tourism product and enhancing the Kingdom of Bahrain’s position as a prominent tourist destination in the Gulf.

She went on, “We look forward to this event highlighting the capital’s position as a unique tourist and cultural destination that reflects the spirit of Bahrain and its rich history. The events are held in certain streets and squares of the old Manama Souq, aiming to provide a unique experience that spotlights local creativity and demonstrate the cultural diversity and rich history of the capital. The program includes various activities, including events held on the roof of Yateem Centre, which is one of the first shopping malls in the region. Al Zainah Plaza also offers a classic shopping experience and exhibitions inspired by different eras, in addition to tasting experiences.”

She added, “We are proud of our partnership with the private sector, which played a prominent role in the success of Celebrate Bahrain Season. We are also proud of the young Bahraini cadres who contributed to Manama Retro by working to create an exceptional tourism experience that simulates a distinctive era from recent Gulf history. We cooperated with a selection of Bahraini youth and local projects to showcase national talents and enhance their role in preserving national identity.”

It is worth noting that Manama Retro, which comes within the Celebrate Bahrain Season 2024, is held under the sponsorship of a number of private sector institutions, including, the National Bank of Bahrain, Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), STC,Infracorp, and Urbaser.
