GCC affirms support for Syrian sovereignty and stability

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers underscored the critical importance of respecting the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic.

In an emergency meeting held in Kuwait, the council firmly rejected any foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs and reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism, chaos, extremism, and incitement.

The meeting was chaired by Abdullah Ali Al Yahya, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait and current President of the Ministerial Council.

Bahrain delegation

Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, participated in the discussions alongside a delegation that included Shaikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director-General of Bilateral Relations; Salah Ali Al Maliki, the Bahraini Ambassador to Kuwait; and H.E. Mohammed Abdulrahman Al Haidan, Chief of Legal Affairs and Acting Head of the GCC Affairs.

Jassim Mohammed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the GCC, was also present.

During the meeting, the council issued a statement emphasizing the need to respect the diversity of the Syrian people and to put an end to bloodshed.

They expressed strong support for all efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and inclusive transitional process that aligns with the aspirations of the Syrian people for stability, development, and a dignified life.

Regional security

The Ministerial Council highlighted that the security and stability of Syria are essential pillars of regional security.

They welcomed proactive measures aimed at ensuring the safety of civilians, halting bloodshed, achieving national reconciliation, and preserving Syrian state institutions and resources.

They also called for the resolution of militias and armed factions, advocating for the limitation of arms possession to state authorities.

Steps

These steps are viewed as critical to maintaining security and stability in Syria while restoring its regional role and international standing.The council urged all parties and components of the Syrian populace to unite in their efforts, prioritise national interests, uphold national unity, and engage in an inclusive national dialogue to fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people for security, stability, development, and prosperity.
