Ten Bangladeshi fishermen caught hauling 850 kilograms of crabs in a protected area have been jailed for 10 days and will be deported after serving their sentences, as authorities crack down on illegal fishing.
The Chief of the Ministries and Public Bodies Prosecution said that the Sixth Minor Criminal Court handed down the sentences and ordered the confiscation of the proceeds from the illegal catch.
The case came to light after the Coast Guard submitted five reports to the Public Prosecution about the activities of the group.
Traps
The 10 men were caught fishing commercially in a protected marine zone using ‘gargoor’ traps.
They were found in possession of an enormous haul of crabs weighing approximately 850 kilograms.
Investigators acted swiftly, detaining the suspects and questioning them.
Evidence
They were confronted with the evidence, including the seized traps and the crab haul.
While the case was being investigated, the catch was sold at a public auction, with the proceeds deposited accordingly.
The deportation orders will be enforced after the sentences have been served.
