Minister of Education, Dr Mohammed Juma, announced a 16:1 student-teacher ratio for the 2023-2024 academic year. However, this figure rises to approximately 30:1 when considering private schools, representing a nearly 50% increase compared to the public school average. This information was revealed in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Shura Council member Dr Fatima Abduljabbar Al Kooheji.
The Minister stated that the ministry aims to further improve the student-teacher ratio, with a target of 14 students per teacher in primary schools, as approved by the Cabinet. Moreover, he stated that there is a specific strategy in place to balance student numbers with administrative staff, considering school size, student population, and educational phase. "The ministry also employs one social supervisor for every 250 students," he stated.
Dr Juma highlighted the ministry's integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the primary school curriculum. AI technologies are being incorporated into lessons to enhance student skills and capabilities, aligning with the national curriculum framework.
"This initiative includes programming skills introduced from the first grade, and AI integration across subjects like information technology, communications, science, mathematics, design, technology, Arabic, English, social studies, Islamic education, and civic education. Furthermore, the curriculum incorporates virtual reality, 3D design, and advanced software to equip students with practical digital skills,"
